The tailwind of 10,051 spectators in Austria Vienna’s Generali Arena was not enough to surprise the ÖFB women: in front of the record crowd in domestic women’s football, coach Irene Fuhrmann’s team had to admit defeat 0-1 against France in the Nations League . “We performed well,” said captain Sarah Puntigam. “The defeat hurts.”

After just five minutes, the world number five proved to be party crashers: First, Verena Hanshaw, in her 100th international match, caused a free kick with an unnecessary handball, but Wendie Renard was forgotten. Their header went to goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger, but the Arsenal legionnaire was unable to hold on to the ball – 0-1.

France dominated, Austria held on and had a chance to equalize in stoppage time in the first half: Celina Degen got to the ball after a free kick from Barbara Dunst – but her shot hit the crossbar (45th + 2). After the break, Austria lacked the power to threaten the World Cup quarter-finalists.

“We can keep up with a top nation”

“The 0-1 loss was very bitter. We had our chances, we have to take advantage of them against France,” explained Puntigam. “We deserved a point,” said Barbara Dunst. “The fans really went along with it.” Despite the defeat, the ÖFB team was celebrated with a lap of honor after the final whistle.

“It was the first time that France played against us for time. That says a lot,” said Laura Feiersinger. Puntigam also took the positive with him: “We can keep up against a top nation.”
