What a spectacular derby in Istanbul! Mesut Özil scores to equalize and in the end Fenerbahce celebrates thanks to a goal in stoppage time.
Thanks to Mesut Özil, Fenerbahce won the prestigious Istanbul derby at Galatasaray on Sunday evening 2-1.
Kerem Aktürkoglu brought the hosts into the lead after a good quarter of an hour, and Özil equalized in the 31st minute. Despite being outnumbered after the yellow-red card against defender Marcel Tisserand (82nd), Fener in the person of Miguel Crespo finally scored the much-acclaimed winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Previously, Galatsaray had been denied the alleged lucky punch and winning goal by Diagne in the 84th minute after a foul and VAR check.
Fenerbahce wins derby: Mesut Özil confirms upward trend
Özil, however, confirmed his personal upward trend with his goal after he had already scored against Kayserispor before the international break. The 33-year-old playmaker was in the starting line-up in a league game for the first time since mid-October and almost played through. The 2014 world champion was only replaced in the first minute of stoppage time.
With the win, Fenerbahce jumped past arch-rivals Galatasaray in the table of the Süper Lig. The team of coach Vitor Pereira is now fifth, but the gap to leaders Trabzonspor is already seven points.
