Wolfgang Overath is 80. Like few others, he shaped football in Germany in the 1970s. His competition and friendship with Günter Netzer are legendary; in 1974, the noble technician and playmaker celebrated his greatest success by winning the World Cup. During his entire career he only played for one club, 1. FC Köln. He later served as president of the club from 2004 to 2011, but ended his term in strife. Overath is fit even in his old age and continues to work every day in his office as a building contractor. He will spend his birthday with his family. “I celebrated my 50th,” he remembers: “With 500 people in Phantasialand. Franz Beckenbauer, Günter Netzer, Uwe Seeler, Fritz Walter – everyone was there. I just shook hands for two hours. Then I left when I was 60 , at 70 too. And at 80 I’ll definitely leave too.” He told the German Press Agency that he wanted to get away for a few days with his wife Karin, with whom he has been married for 57 years, and his three children.
