Before the home European Championship: Handball national coach Gislason is worried about personnel

Regular goalkeeper Andreas Wolff is in rehab, backcourt player Fabian Wiede is due to have an operation. The number of injuries is giving national handball coach Alfred Gislason a headache.

Around three months before the home European Championship in Germany, national handball coach Alfred Gislason is worried about his staff.

“There are really a lot of players at the moment who are either only playing to a limited extent or have even dropped out completely. When I saw Julian Köster, the next player, limping off the pitch yesterday in Gummersbach, it caused me stress and some worries,” said the 64-year-old Icelander the portal “handball-world.news”.

The German national team’s next international match in preparation for the European Championship is scheduled for November 3rd in Neu-Ulm against Egypt. The season highlight for the DHB selection begins on January 10th in Düsseldorf with the opening game against Switzerland. By then, Gislason hopes that the list of ailing players will be shortened again.

Gislason skeptical

Most recently it hit backcourt player Fabian Wiede, who had already missed the 2020 European Championships and the World Cup this year due to injury. “Given the severity of his injury, I don’t think he will be able to play again in two months,” said Gislason skeptically. Last week, Wiede suffered a bone avulsion and a fracture in his right ankle and required surgery.

In any case, regular goalkeeper Andreas Wolff’s participation in the European Championship is questionable. The keeper from Polish champions Industria Kielce suffered a herniated disc in August and has been sidelined ever since. Wolff recently left open a date for his comeback.

Hendrik Pekeler’s fitness level is also unclear. The pivot, whom Alfred Gislason wants to bring back to the national team for the European Championships, made his return to the field last week at THW Kiel. But the 32-year-old is not yet 100 percent fit after his heel operation. “It’s important for him now to cope with the stress well,” said Gislason.
