Boca and River will host a new edition of the Superclásico this Sunday at La Bombonera

Boca Juniors and River Plate will star this Sunday in the exclusive match of the Professional Football League (LPF) Cup when they face each other in La Bombonera in one of the interzonal matches of the seventh date, in a Superclásico that for the “Xeneizes” was in second place due to their international agenda, and for the “Millonarios” it represents a great opportunity to strengthen the cycle of their coach Martín Demichelis.

The match that will capture all the attention on Sunday will be played in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of La Boca at an unusual time of 2:00 p.m., will be refereed by Andrés Merlos from Mendoza and televised by ESPN Premium and TNT Sports signals.

Boca will take on the Superclásico in the middle of the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores that it disputes with Palmeiras, after having tied zero to zero at home and with the mission of advancing to the final next Thursday in the decisive match to be played in São Paulo.

In the domestic tournament, the campaign of the team led by Jorge Almirón is not good, with just two wins, three losses in a row and a last draw at home against Lanús (1-1) that left little flavor.

In any case, Boca did not leave aside the League Cup and is aware that a good result in the Superclásico will lift their spirits and leave them on track to be one of the four that will advance to the quarterfinals, although it is clearly not the priority of the semester.

The “Xeneizes” have just 7 points and eight teams up in Zone B led by Racing Club, although there are still seven games to be played.

On the River side, they are fourth in Zone A with 10 points and just three teams ahead, and without any other competition on their horizon, since they were left out in the round of 16 of the Libertadores and also in the round of 16 of the Argentine Cup, the local tournament is the only objective it pursues until the end of the year.

In Boca, the panorama regarding the formation that will face its lifelong rival is one of uncertainty, with the certainty that it will not have its captain and leader of the defense, Marcos Rojo, due to a strong contracture that motivated Almirón to reserve it for the rematch at the Allianz Parque in São Paulo.

The “xeneize” formation, for the most part, will be organized with players who did not play against the Brazilians or only played a few minutes and will include Lucas Blondel, Marcelo Weigandt, Bruno Valdez, Nahuel Valentini, Marcelo Saracchi, Jorman Campuzano, Ezequiel Fernández , Juan Ramírez, Exequiel Zeballos, Darío Benedetto and Lucas Janson, all with the possibility of starting.

Among those who could repeat are goalkeeper Sergio “Chiquito” Romero and midfielder Cristian Medina, while Rojo, Guillermo “Pol” Fernández and Colombian Frank Fabra were concentrated and could even occupy the substitute bench.

In River the outlook is clearer, since coach Martín Demichelis rehearsed with a team that will have the return of three starters: Leandro González Pírez, Nicolás De la Cruz and Enzo Pérez, and with the surprise of Andrés Herrera on the right side.

In that formation, the absence of a historic player like Milton Casco on the right side is surprising, since he rested last weekend in the draw with Banfield (1-1) to be against Boca, the player who occupied the right side will not be there either, Santiago Simón, who was highly praised by the coach, but González Pírez will go from the start despite the fact that he has not played for almost two months.

As for the rest of the team and in relation to the match against Banfield, the Colombian Miguel Borja will return for the Venezuelan forward Salomón Rondón, Enzo Pérez for Matías Kranevitter and De la Cruz for Pablo Solari.

The “Millonarios”, who last won at La Bombonera in 2018 with one of the goals scored by Gonzalo “Pity” Martínez, who will be among the substitutes, want to win the Superclásico for the second time this year after the previous triumph of the Last May 7 at the Monumental stadium by 1 to 0 with the goal scored by Borja from a penalty, after a controversial decision by Neuquén referee Darío Herrera, who was subsequently stopped for 15 days and spent two dates without directing.

As for the history between the two giants of Argentine soccer, adding amateurism and professionalism in AFA tournaments, they faced each other 214 times and favors Boca with an advantage of seven victories.

The “Xeneizes” won 78 times, River won 71 times and tied 65 times.
