LASK is still at the bottom of Group E with no points after the second matchday of the Europa League. Linz lost 0-1 (0-1) to French Cup winners FC Toulouse on Thursday with a goal from Gabriel Suazo (31st). After an offensively harmless first half, LASK improved after the break, but it wasn’t enough for a point.
The southern French started their first European Cup home game in 14 years with powerful combination play, but that didn’t last long. The Linzers, without the ailing midfielder Sascha Horvath, took the pace out of the game and got the game under control with a lot of possession, but had no chance to score in the first half. The most dangerous thing was in the French penalty area after Mikkel Desler’s back pass was too short and the 18-year-old goalkeeper Guillaume Restes reached it just before George Bello (22′).
Toulouse were also safe for half an hour, but took the lead after Linz’s defensive work was too passive. Thijs Dallinga got ahead of Andres Andrade and the onrushing full-back Suazo was able to shoot in from five meters fairly unhindered. Shortly before the break there wasn’t much left for the second goal. Dallinga got to the ball before Andrade, but shot over the goal from close range (44th).
LASK came out of the locker room unchanged in terms of personnel, but braver and with more offensive power. Twice the Black and Whites were alone at five in front of the goal, but were unable to manage a controlled finish. Usor was surprised by a rebound (55th), Ljubicic sent an ideal cross over the goal (58th). On the other hand, goalkeeper Tobias Lawal stood out with a well-placed header from Dallinga (69′).
Thomas Sageder’s team will continue their international game on October 26th with a guest appearance at Union Saint-Gilloise. The Belgians lost 0-2 (0-1) at Liverpool FC on Thursday and are third in the table with one point.
