Palmeiras’ fury after elimination: calls Boca “anti-football”

October 7, 2023 – 1:51 p.m.

A report prepared by the São Paulo club assured that the Boca players “made time” until the match expired. Then they won on penalties.

After the semi-final rematch, Palmeiras presented a report prepared by the Performance Analysis of the São Paulo club in which it highlights that Boca players consumed 22 minutes of play with medical care and delays by goalkeeper Sergio Romero, in the revenge match for the semifinal of the Libertadores Cup played last Thursday in San Pablo.

The match ended 1-1, in the first leg in La Bombonera it was 0-0, and Boca advanced to the final in a penalty shootoutnow playing on November 4 against Fluminense, from Brazil, at the Maracaná Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Palmeiras alleges that 12 minutes were consumed due to falls of Boca players and assists on the court and 10 due to a delay in the serve from Romero’s goal, reported Esporte Balloon.

The 22 minutes does not even take into account the delay in other moments of the match, such as throw-ins, fouls and situations in which the Argentine players delayed the game since the total time of stopped play would be even greater.

Palmeiras asked for “actions” to repeat the “anti-game”

After the match, the director of football, Anderson Barros, complained about the attitude of the Uruguayan referee Andrés Matonte and asked actions to Conmebol to prevent the “anti-game” from being repeated which the Argentine team supposedly practices.

“I am convinced that Conmebol will take measures. We cannot allow the Libertadores to return to being the Libertadores of yesteryear, in which the matches did not take place and there were referees who were complacent about anti-play. What happened was a shame,” Barros said.

According to the standards established by FIFA, the ideal is for each match to have at least 60 minutes of ball in play but Palmeiras and Boca Juniors only played 49 minutes.

The Uruguayan referee awarded a total of eight minutes added timethree in the first and another five in the second half.
