DOHA, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won his third Formula One world championship on Saturday after his teammate and only rival for the title, Sergio Perez, ended up in the gravel in the sprint of the Qatar Grand Prix.

Mexican Pérez needed to finish in the top three places to keep the title officially open for another day, until Sunday’s race, but he started eighth and fell to eleventh place before colliding with Esteban Ocon’s Alpine on lap 11.
The Red Bull then became stuck in the gravel, with Pérez exiting the car to end his activity for the day.
That meant that Verstappen, who was in third place at the time, became champion for the third year in a row regardless of where he ultimately finished the test.
The 26-year-old Dutch driver will start from pole position for Sunday’s race, chasing his 14th victory in 17 grands prix so far this season. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin. Edited in Spanish by Javier Leira)
