The Slovenian professional cyclist Matej Mohoric is the new gravel world champion.
The 28-year-old won the 169-kilometer race in the Italian province of Treviso, which was largely held on gravel roads, as a soloist ahead of the Belgian Florian Vermeersch. The Briton Connor Swift came third ahead of Spain’s Alejandro Valverde. The Belgian top favorite Wout van Aert was thrown back by a fall and finished eighth.
Mohoric made the decisive attack in the World Cup, which was being held for the second time, on a climb about 18.5 kilometers from the finish. The classics specialist fell 3.3 kilometers from the finish, but fell softly onto a bale of hay and only lost a few seconds of his lead.
