Avalanche disaster: record mountaineer missing

At least two people died over the weekend while trying to climb the summit of the eight-thousander Shishapangma (8,027 meters). The American mountaineer Anna Gutu (33) and their Nepalese mountain guide Mingmar Sherpa died in an avalanche accident. The American Gina Marie Rzucidlo (45) and her companion Tenjen “Lama” Sherpa are currently still missing. There is virtually no hope of recovering them alive.

Tenjen “Lama” Sherpa made headlines weeks ago for leading Norwegian Kristin Haria to all 14 eight-thousanders in just 92 days had. The world record was at the end of July Drama on the K2 has been overshadowed. More than 50 alpinists, including Harila and Tenjen “Lama” Sherpa, had climbed over a dying high porter while storming the summit without providing any serious help. The man’s body is still lying on the way to the K2 summit.

Record attempts were also involved in the current tragedy on Shishapangma. Gutu and Rzucidlo wanted to be the first Americans to climb all 14 eight-thousanders. Both were only missing this one peak, which is located in the territory of Tibet and China respectively.
