The top seed from Lower Austria was defeated on Thursday by 22-year-old Canadian Gabriel Diallo, number 164 in the world, 1:6.6:4.6:7(5). In the ATP ranking, the 30-year-old will fall a few positions from 72nd place. After the hard court tournament in Slovakia, Thiem now continues in Antwerp and at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.
Thiem only conceded the break to 1:3 in the first set against Diallo, and a little later the former US Open champion fell behind 1:5 due to a double fault. Thiem’s biggest problem was initially the errors in his own serve game. The 2.03 m tall Canadian, however, allowed significantly less in his own service. In the second set, Thiem played significantly improved, fended off two break points when the score was 1:1 and took Diallo’s serves to make it 4:2 and 6:4. In the decision, Diallo, who served 15 aces, had the better nerves in the tiebreak and converted his first match point after 2:05 hours.
