Sports policy: Prime Minister Modi: India wants the 2036 Olympics

The race for the 2036 Olympics is likely to be quite difficult for a possible German application. Now India has also announced its interest in the Summer Games.

India wants to bid for the 2036 Olympics. “We will pull out all the stops,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the opening ceremony of the 141st session of the International Olympic Committee in Mumbai. The head of government added that the Olympics are a long-held dream for India.

With a bid for the 2036 Summer Games, India could become a competitor for Germany. The German Olympic Sports Confederation is currently examining a renewed candidacy.

Modi expressed confidence of getting the IOC’s support for his Olympic efforts. The Prime Minister also signaled India’s interest in hosting the 2029 Youth Olympic Games.

The next Summer Games will take place in Paris in 2024. Los Angeles will host in 2028 and Brisbane in Australia has been selected for 2032. According to the IOC, there are already a number of interested parties for the games afterwards.

India, as the most populous country in the world with great economic potential, can expect good opportunities with the umbrella organization. With the inclusion of cricket, which is extremely popular in India in particular, in the Olympic program for 2028, the IOC has already demonstrated its increased focus on this market.
