Once a year, Austria’s best players and coaches are honored at the players’ union’s “Bruno Gala” – a kind of monument to Bruno Pezzey, the legendary libero with the number 5, who was considered an exemplary professional not only on the field.
With Pregarten’s captain Markus Blutsch, this honor has now also been bestowed on an amateur footballer from Upper Austria. The 28-year-old received the “Bruno” award for the most popular amateur player this year (interview on pages 8 and 9). But this award is much more. It is a trophy as a symbol of the irrepressible will that Blutschi has shown in recent months.
At the beginning of the year, the grandson of LASK legend Dolfi Blutsch received the shocking diagnosis of testicular cancer. Full of ambition and strength, the Pregarten footballer fought against the insidious disease and defeated it.
The ex-professional was and is a model athlete who always stayed down to earth. That’s exactly what he proved again on the last match day: While others probably get the media attention after receiving such an award, he made the next positive sporting headlines with two goals in Pregarten’s 4-2 win in Mondsee. A real role model – for Upper Austria’s entire lower house.
