Austria’s women’s table tennis champion Linz AG Froschberg is ready for the Champions League opener on Monday (7 p.m.) against one of a total of five French representatives in the “premier class” with twelve clubs, ACL Grand Quevilly, in the Lissfeld sports park. Sofia Polcanova made a perfect landing, the number one is halfway fit after an injury break of almost four months due to massive knee and hip problems.
“I have to push through, only the strongest get through,” said the 29-year-old European champion, who has avoided operations and taken the conservative route. It’s worked quite well so far: “I’m under no illusions before my first match, I tried to change my technique to relieve the hip as much as possible. I’ve been without painkillers for a few weeks.”
Anastasia Sterner is 100% up to speed. The 18-year-old, who leads the red-white-red U19 national team, can get a taste of the Champions League for the first time – even if only as a substitute. “I’m looking forward to it. Sofia and Liu Jia are my great role models. They give me valuable tips, I’m developing every day,” she gushed.
From the perspective of Froschberg President Günther Renner, whose team is seeded third, the chances of winning the trophy are minimal: “Tarnobrzeg is practically unbeatable. The Poles have the three best Chinese women playing in Europe.”
