(By Marcos González Cezer) The Argentine Archery Federation (Fatarco) hopes that the team that will compete in the Pan American Games taking place in Chile “reaches the semifinals in one of the four disciplines in which it will participate,” said its president. , Diego Adrover.
“We aspire to be able to reach the semifinals in one of the four disciplines in which we are going to compete. It will be difficult to surpass the performance carried out in Lima 2019 where gold was achieved in a mixed composite team,” said Adrover, 52 years old and head of Fatarco. since September 2021.
The Argentine athletes of the specialty will appear in Santiago 2023 between Wednesday, November 1 and Sunday, November 5.
The national archery, which has competed in the Pan American Games since the 1979 San Juan de Puerto Rico edition, won a gold medal: María Eugenia González Briozzo and Iván Nikolajuk (composed of teams in Lima 2019; a silver medal (Pablo Basgall, Marcelo Cavagliatto and Marcelo Grillo (recured teams in Mar del Plata 1995) and a bronze: Pablo Basgall (1995).

Télam: What challenge did you set for your sport at the Pan American Games?
Diego Adrover: For the next Pan American Games we aspire to be able to reach the semifinals in one of the four disciplines in which we are going to compete: Men’s Recurve, Women’s Recurve, Mixed Recurve and Men’s Compound. The latter is where there is the greatest opportunity since Iván Nikolajuk, gold medalist in the 2022 Odesur Games individually and gold medalist in the 2019 Pan American Games mixed, participates for our country.
T: Will the result in Lima improve?
DA: It will be difficult to surpass the performance carried out in Lima 2019 where gold was achieved in the mixed composite team. This team was unable to qualify again for this event. In terms of individual resources, they were losing ground compared to other countries in the region, but in mixed they could put up a fight and reach the semifinals.
T: How do you define the Argentine team that will compete in Chile? What characteristics does it have and what are its greatest strengths and weaknesses?
DA: It is an experienced team but, due to economic circumstances, it does not have the international experience it should have to face a competition of this type. It is formed by Iván Nikokajuk in the male compound; Florencia Leithold in women’s recurve and Damián Jajarabilla in men’s recurve. The last two compete separately in singles, and together as a mixed team.
T: How was the preparation for the Pan American Games and what level will the team reach?
DA: For this tournament, a final tune-up was carried out with the Cuban coach Ricardo Baños Allue, doing work in the country and in Chile. We hope that the three goalkeepers arrive with the possibility of displaying their greatest performance.
T: Who are the rivals with whom Argentina will fight for medals?
DA: The chances of medals are not very high. The biggest rivals are the United States, Mexico, and Brazil in recurve, joined by Colombia in compounds. Then there are countries like Chile, Ecuador and Guatemala that can surprise. Argentina is in that same group.
T: The coach of the Argentine rowing team, Pablo Susini, stated in an interview with Télam that “they will give satisfaction to the country” in the Pan American Games. And archery?
DA: You always leave with the highest expectations, but reality tells us that it is very difficult to reach the top positions. Although the team is going to give its all to reach the highest levels.
T: What are the team training like? How many days per week and how many hours per day?
DA: Archers train between four and six days a week, according to planning and their possibilities. Each session can last between three and five hours depending on the work to be carried out, the planned load and the stage of the microcycle in which they are located.
-T: Are the athletes who will go to Chile scholarships from the National Sports Secretariat and the National High Performance Sports Entity (Enard)?
-DA: The three goalkeepers have scholarships from Enard and the Secretariat. In the case of Iván Nikolajuk, with both.
