The 27-year-old Styrian kept pace with world number ten Alexander Zverev by half a set on Monday, but had to admit defeat 4:6,1:6 after 1:18 hours. It was the third defeat in the third duel with the German. As a result, Filip Misolic is still in action against the Briton Cameron Norrie.
Ofner started the game very strongly, impressed with his serve and fast-paced game. In Zverev’s first three service games, he fought his way to 44th place. Although not a breakball, it felt very close. The seventh game brought the preliminary decision in the first set. Ofner got himself into trouble with slight mistakes, but was still able to fend off two break points. Then he had four chances to make it 4:3, but he couldn’t put the lid on it. Zverev, on the other hand, used his third chance thanks to a slight forehand error from Ofner.
On the way to being thrown out, Zverev wobbled a bit, but still used his first set point after 52 minutes. Ofner did not recover from the setback, was unable to match his performance at the beginning and was in a losing battle despite the support of the home audience. As in the round of 32 at Wimbledon 2017 and in the first round of the French Open 2022, Ofner failed to win a set against Zverev.
