Champions League: Bayern stars are looking forward to Neuer’s comeback

Despite a strong performance in the 3-1 win against Galatasaray Istanbul, Sven Ulreich probably has to say goodbye to the Munich goal for the time being. He is happy about Neuer’s return. Joshua Kimmich finds clear words.

The stars of FC Bayern Munich are looking forward to the return of their captain. Manuel Neuer could be in the Bayern goal for the first time in almost a year in the home game against Darmstadt 98 on Saturday.

“First and foremost, I’m happy for him personally. I think only he knows what a hard path he’s taken,” said Joshua Kimmich, who wore the captain’s armband in the 3-1 win against Galatasaray Istanbul.

“We all saw how he worked every day, how he stuck to himself. So I wholeheartedly wish him to come back. I’m extremely happy for the club, for us as a team, but first and foremost line for him personally,” said Kimmich.

Immediately after the success in Turkey, coach Thomas Tuchel did not decide whether Neuer would actually be in goal for FC Bayern on Saturday. “We have to wait and talk to Manu,” said Tuchel on Prime Video. If he can, then he will play. “He wants to anyway,” added Tuchel.

Accident on ski tour

Neuer last played for Bayern on November 12, 2022 in a 2-0 away win against FC Schalke. The 2014 world champion played his last game ever in Germany’s early World Cup exit in Qatar on December 1, 2022 against Costa Rica. After the tournament, he broke his tibia and fibula on his right lower leg during a ski tour. He has been working on the comeback ever since.

Representative Sven Ulreich also impressed on Tuesday evening in Istanbul and prevented his team from falling behind with good saves. “Of course you’re always happy when you play. I know my role at FC Bayern and Manu has now fought his way back,” said Ulreich. “I’m happy for him because it’s been a long road for him too. If Manu plays at the weekend, Manu will make a good comeback.” He himself will “of course” sit on the bench, even though as an athlete you always want to play.

The 35-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season. “We’re only in October, there’s still a long way to go, there’s still a lot of water flowing down the Isar,” said Ulreich about his future. “We’ll see what happens. We have one-year contracts. In the next few weeks and months there will definitely be a conversation about what the club is planning, what it looks like for me.”
