Women’s football: Trio around Germany presents World Cup bid for 2027

Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands are presenting their joint bid for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. Chancellor Olaf Scholz is one of the supporters.

The football associations from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands have officially presented their joint application to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Under the motto “BNG2027”, which stands for “Breaking New Ground” as well as “Belgium, Netherlands, Germany”, the associations want to prevail against the competition in the award next year, such as the German Football Association (DFB ) announced.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who visited the DFB women in Frankfurt on Tuesday, has already shown himself to be a supporter of the idea. “It would be a big deal for us if this World Cup took place here too,” said the SPD politician during his visit. The games are to be played in a compact region, which is why only locations in North Rhine-Westphalia are represented for Germany. Dortmund, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Gelsenkirchen are planned – these are exactly the same venues with which North Rhine-Westphalia will also be taking part in the men’s European Championship in 2024.

The three association presidents Bernd Neuendorf, Pascale van Damme (Belgium) and Just Spee (Netherlands) said in a joint statement on Wednesday: “We are confident that we will offer the participating teams and fans from all over the world a tournament of incomparable quality – unique experiences and exciting games at the highest international level.” Women’s football is “at a historic point in its development.”

A decision is expected to be made on May 17, 2024 at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok. The application documents must be submitted to the world association by December 8th of this year. Brazil, South Africa and the duo USA and Mexico, which together with Canada will host the men’s World Cup in 2026, are considered competitors for the German-Dutch-Belgian bid.
