Alexander Zverev has overcome his small low for the time being. The Olympic champion shows a strong performance in Vienna.
Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev reached the quarterfinals of the ATP tournament in Vienna with a confident performance. The 26-year-old from Hamburg won 6:2, 6:4 against the British world number 18. Cameron Norrie through.
In 1:18 hours, Zverev hardly showed any phase of weakness and remains on track for his desired participation in the ATP Finals in Turin in mid-November. The eight best players of this season are there at the end of the year, Zverev is currently in seventh place in this ranking. In Vienna he will now face the winner of the game between the Russian Andrei Rublev and Matteo Arnaldi from Italy.
Deep seems overcome
Zverev started strong against Norrie, managed a break straight away and showed a high serve rate himself. In the second round, Norrie had treatment above his right knee, but stuck with it. With the score at 5:4, Zverev had to fend off two break chances, but was able to celebrate a little later. The small low at the end of the tournaments in Asia, when Zverev was eliminated twice right at the start, seems to have been overcome.
Daniel Altmaier had previously lost his first round game in Vienna. The 25-year-old from Kempen lost to the French veteran Gaël Monfils (37) 4:6, 4:6. At the tournament in Basel, Jan-Lennard Struff was the last remaining German professional to fail in the round of 16. The 33-year-old from Warstein clearly lost to Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 1:6, 4:6.
