Victories over Michael Smith and James Wade: Peter Wright impressed at the European Darts Championship in Dortmund and deservedly won the title. On the final day he had to get out particularly early.
“Happy Halloween everyone,” called Peter Wright to the packed Westfalenhalle in Dortmund. The darts star from Scotland held the European Championship trophy in his hand; orange pumpkins could be seen everywhere on both his trousers and his colorful shirt. And after the 11:6 final victory over Englishman James Wade, Wright was also able to have a few jokes.
When asked if he was in shape at the right time, “Snakebite” jokingly replied: “I didn’t want to win the tournament here, I’d rather win the World Cup.” For Wright it was the second European title after 2020.
Wright is definitely one of the big favorites going into the hot phase of the season, in which the Grand Slam of Darts and the Players Championships Finals take place before the World Cup (December 15th to January 3rd). Especially after the tournament in Dortmund, which brought dominant victories over former European champion Wade and world champion Michael Smith. But Wright didn’t forget the narrow 6:5 against Gabriel Clemens, in which he was almost out in the first round. “I was lucky against Gabriel,” admitted Wright.
On the final day, he got up at 5:30 a.m. to have his wife do his hair. Joanne is not only Peter Wright’s hairdresser, but also takes care of the 53-year-old’s management. Final loser Wade had nothing but fair congratulations after the final. “That man played a lot better than me,” Wade said.
