After the late low blows for LASK against Saint-Gilloise (1:2 in the Europa League) and against Rapid (3:3 in the Bundesliga), Kapfenberg is set to be knocked out on Wednesday: it’s about getting into the cup. Quarterfinals (6 p.m.).
“We have an unpleasant opponent waiting for us in Kapfenberg. We have to be very vigilant and need a highly concentrated performance,” said coach Thomas Sageder. “If we can do that, I am convinced that we will reach the quarter-finals.” He should give a few players a break. Marin Ljubicic will definitely be watching: The striker suffered a thigh injury after his two goals against Rapid.
Fitness is the trump card of Kapfenberg
LASK will also need freshness – because in Kapfenberg coach Abdullah Ibrakovic is compensating for the lack of play with even more running work. Hardly any second division team is fitter than the “Falken”, who have only lost at home to St. Pölten this season.
In addition, Kapfenberg was not a good ground for LASK in the recent cup: LASK only left as promoted in the first duel, and they were eliminated twice in the last game.
- May 15, 1963 – 3:2: In the semi-finals, LASK and Kapfenberg exchanged blows. Goals from Paul Kozlizek and Rudolf Sabetzer turned the Styrians’ lead in favor of the athletes, and after Kapfenberg’s equalizer, Alfred Teinitzer scored ten minutes before the end to secure promotion. LASK then lost the final against Austria Vienna 0-1.
- March 7, 2006 – 0:2: In the round of 16 duel between the two second division teams at the time, LASK around Ivica Vastic was the favorite – but coach Werner Gregoritsch’s team was still in hibernation at the start of spring. Rade Djokic scored both goals for the home team (6th, 82nd).
Ivica Vastic went down with the LASK in Kapfenberg in 2006.

- October 29, 2014 – 3:5: As leaders of the regional league, LASK entered the second division team, two current athletes were already there at the time: the current sports director Radovan Vujanovic scored two goals to give the team a 3-1 lead, and Peter Michorl watched from the bench as Ronivaldo gave LASK the lead limits: The current Blue-White Linz striker scored three goals.
Ronivaldo (left, against Mario Hieblinger and Balakiyem Takougnadi) kicked LASK out of the cup in 2014.

Quarterfinals brought forward
The promoted team will play in the quarter-finals on February 2nd, 3rd or 4th – a week earlier than originally planned: In order to enable Austria’s national team to prepare longer for the European Championship in Germany (from June 14th), the spring will start a weekend earlier . The Bundesliga begins the following weekend, with all rounds moving forward by one week. The last round of the Bundesliga is for the 18th/19th. Scheduled for May.
