The DFB Cup game between 1. FC Saarbrücken and FC Bayern will be played on Wednesday – unless it rains again. Heavy rain had badly affected the pitch at the Ludwigsparkstadion.
The DFB Cup game between 1. FC Saarbrücken and FC Bayern Munich, which is threatened with cancellation, will be played on Wednesday (8.45 p.m./Sky and ARD).
“As of today, the game is being played. The pitch makes a good impression, the measures have taken effect,” said Peter Müller, spokesman for the third division soccer team the day before the game. Representatives of the city as the owner of the stadium, the German Football Association and the club took an inspection of the condition of the pitch and gave the green light for kick-off.
After heavy rain, the Saarland championship game against SG Dynamo Dresden last Sunday was canceled during half-time. If, contrary to the weather forecast, it rains on Wednesday night or on the day of the match, referee Frank Willenborg will have to decide whether the game can actually take place. The Ludwigsparkstadion is sold out with 16,000 spectators.
For the record cup winner from Munich, a cancellation would not be unproblematic given the busy program in the Bundesliga and the Champions League. Moving the match to another stadium at such short notice was out of the question.
