Tennis: Zverev makes it to the round of 16 in Paris-Bercy

Alexander Zverev is serving to reach the round of 16 at the Masters 1000 tournament in Paris. But then it remains exciting for a long time. The audience cheers on his opponent.

Germany’s best tennis professional Alexander Zverev made it to the round of 16 in the race for the hoped-for ATP Finals participation at the Masters 1000 tournament in Paris-Bercy.

The Hamburger won in the second round against the Frenchman Ugo Humbert, who was loudly celebrated by the audience, 6:4, 6:7 (3:7), 7:6 (7:5). Only after 3:29 hours did Zverev make progress with his first match point and collect important points.

“Of course I would have liked to finish it in two sets, but it ended with a bit of drama. I think it was a fantastic fight, entertaining for everyone,” said Zverev: “I think I not only beat Ugo today, I think I beat the other 15,000 people in the hall a bit too. The atmosphere is always incredible.”

Zverev could have won the match in the second set on his own serve, but in the third round he had to make up for a break and a deficit in the tiebreak. In the round of the best 16, Zverev faces a supposedly more difficult challenge on Thursday against the Greek top ten player Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Qualification for finals remains in your own hands

Regardless of other results in Paris, the ninth in the world rankings still has the hoped-for qualification for the ATP Finals in his own hands thanks to his second-round win against Humbert. The Norwegian Casper Ruud and US professional Tommy Paul were eliminated as two of Zverev’s competitors in the race for the Turin tickets in Paris.

Zverev had an eventful and exciting duel with Humbert. The fact that the Hamburger was in trouble time and time again in his own service games in the first set soon faded into the background. In the second round, the ninth in the world rankings was already leading 5:3, but even at 5:4 and on his own serve, he failed to bring the match to an end. Zverev played passively and allowed the French left-hander, who was playing stronger again and was loudly cheered by the audience and is ranked 26th in the world, to come back into the game.

Daniel Altmaier is also represented in the round of 16. The 25-year-old from Kempen did not have to compete in the second round because Taylor Fritz withdrew from the tournament due to injury.
