FSV Mainz 05: Heidel: Svensson’s decision was made at half past three in the morning

On Thursday evening, Mainz 05 announced the departure of Bo Svensson. The decision was made the night before – immediately after the cup exit in Berlin.

The separation between Bundesliga soccer team FSV Mainz 05 and coach Bo Svensson was decided the night after the cup exit at Hertha BSC.

Svensson, sports director Christian Heidel and sports director Martin Schmidt sat down in the hotel in Berlin immediately after the 3-0 defeat, as Heidel told a press conference. According to Heidel, a decision was made at 3:30 a.m. “That was a separation at the highest level, on equal terms,” said the official. The process is “light years away from a layoff or termination.”

The previous U23 coach Jan Siewert is supposed to prepare the 05ers for the Bundesliga game against RB Leipzig on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky). “I’ve experienced a few separations from coaches. There were never any pleasant ones, but the one with Bo hurt everyone, including me. That reminded me of saying goodbye to Jürgen Klopp,” said Heidel about the 44-year-old Dane.

Svensson appeared in front of the team he had looked after since January 2021 on Thursday afternoon. “He gave a very moving speech there. I don’t know how many people cried – I was there,” said 60-year-old Heidel. The team was dejected afterwards. Svensson sent an emotional message to the Mainz fans after his departure.
