“We are happy and excited by the significance of this medal, today was a day to compete and to win that gold. When a federation is committed to women’s soccer it has these results,” said the technical director of Mexico, the Spanish Pedro López.

“The foundations we are laying are to build something great and I think we have all the materials to be able to achieve it. I hope it is the first title of many with Mexico,” he added.
With both of their goalkeepers, Christiane Endler and Antonia Canales, leaving the national team to return to their clubs, Chile had to rely on forward María José Urrutia to protect the goal.
However, the forward could not prevent the goal from Rebeca Bernal, who put the ball into the right corner after receiving a foul in the 30th minute.
Despite good possession and constant pressure, the Chileans failed to equalize. In the second half, the Mexicans pressed harder and got the second goal in the 51st minute, but it was disallowed due to an advanced position by María Sánchez.
The Mexican team was close to scoring the second goal at the end of the game, but Urrutia prevented it with a goal in the 91st minute.
“We are very happy and proud of what we have done for our country, it is very gratifying to achieve this gold and make history,” said Bernal.
