For her part, Di Tella assured that it was “totally unexpected” for her to have been chosen as standard bearer by her colleagues. “That part of the recognition is super special. As athletes we share a lot of things. It’s very nice to find those points in common between us and feel accompanied in competitions,” she said.
“Very happy and very grateful. It is an honor to represent fencing, which does not always have so much visibility. I am very happy,” said the fencer.
On the other hand, canoeing and Basque pelota, with six each, were the sports that gave the Argentine delegation the most medals in Santiago 2023.
Canoeing added two gold medals for the K1 1000 (Agustín Vernice) and the K4 500 (Vernice, Manuel Lascano, Gonzalo Lo Moro Benassi and Gonzalo Carreras); silver in the K2 500 (Vernice and Lo Moro Benassi), K1 500 (Brenda Rojas) and K2 500 (Rojas and María Magdalena Garro), while bronze in the K4 500 (Candelaria Sequeira, Lucía Dalto, Martina Isequilla and Sabrina Ameghino ).
The Basque pelota, for its part, was gilded by María Lis García and Cynthia Pinto in the women’s trinquet; silver in the rubber paddle with Sabrina Andrade and Federico Fernández and bronze in the frontball competitions with Micaela Cortez and frontenis with Lorenzo Cardozo and Emiliano García.
Meanwhile, canoeing, sailing, hockey, and water skiing were the sports that climbed to the top of the podium on a couple of occasions.
In the breakdown of the medals won by Argentine athletes, 17 were gold, 25 silver and 33 bronze. culminating in seventh place in the medal table, which the United States comfortably led with 286 medals (124 gold).
Brazil was second with 205, (66 gold) and Mexico completed the podium with 142 and 52 gold. Canada added a total of 164 medals, but 46 were gold. Then followed Cuba (69, with 30 gold) and Colombia (101, 29 gold).
