Tennis player Laura Siegemund was the first German to triumph in the doubles competition at the WTA Finals.
The 35-year-old Swabian won the final in Cancun, Mexico, together with the Russian Vera Swonarewa, against Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez from the USA and Australia with 6:4, 6:4. Due to the chaotic weather conditions in Cancun, the final had to be played a day later on Monday.
When she took part in the WTA Finals for the first time, Siegemund was the first German finalist in the doubles competition in 36 years. Claudia Kohde-Kilsch was in the final between 1985 and 1987 with Helena Sukova and in 1983 with Eva Pfaff, but always lost.
