Alexander Zverev travels to Turin as an outsider. The preliminary group is tough for the Olympic tennis champion.
Alexander Zverev will face, among others, the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the group phase of the ATP Finals. That was the result of the draw in Turin.
Other opponents of the Olympic tennis champion are the two Russians Daniil Medvedev and Andrei Rublev. In the other preliminary group, world number one Novak Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune, trained by Boris Becker, meet.
The tournament for the best eight players of the season begins on Sunday. The top two finishers in the two preliminary round groups qualify for the semi-finals.
“It means a lot to me”
“It means a lot to me to be back at the ATP Finals,” said Zverev. The Hamburg native has already won the annual final twice in his career, most recently in the final against Medvedev in 2021.
After his complicated foot injury, Zverev took a while to get back into shape at the beginning of the year. With good performances from the middle of the year onwards, he still made it to Turin. Among other things, he won the ATP tournament in his hometown of Hamburg. Recently, however, Zverev has shown fluctuating performance again, which is why the 26-year-old is only starting as an outsider.
