Tennis: Kühnen believes Becker will have a good tennis partnership with Rune

Boris Becker is coach again. He wants to promote a young Dane. Former tennis professional Patrik Kühnen speaks of a great challenge.

Former Davis Cup team boss Patrik Kühnen thinks highly of Boris Becker’s new coaching job.

“Boris is still very close to tennis and he absolutely has the know-how to develop Holger Rune further. From the playful and mental side, he has so much knowledge that Holger Rune can benefit a lot from him. Everything is still there fresh, but this partnership can be a very good partnership if both find each other. That’s the impression I get from the outside,” said Kühnen (57) to the German Press Agency before the start of the ATP finals in Turin. The former tennis professional accompanies the tournament for the TV channel Sky.

“Boris has won the tournaments that Holger Rune wants to win in his own career. As a player and coach, he knows what it takes to achieve that,” Kühnen continued. “On the one hand, Boris puts his heart and soul into it, he can certainly help Holger Rune a lot with the annual and tournament planning. On the other hand, Holger Rune is a very exciting player who defines clear goals and has a lot of potential. It’s a great challenge for both of them .”

As coach of the 24-time Grand Slam tournament winner Novak Djokovic, Becker celebrated some successes between 2013 and 2016. Now he looks after the Dane Rune. At the ATP Finals, the 20-year-old will play his opening game on Sunday (9 p.m.) against the world number one from Serbia. In the other preliminary group, Alexander Zverev will face Carlos Alcaraz from Spain in his first game on Monday (2:30 p.m.).
