Thousands of people paid their last respects to English football legend Bobby Charlton in Manchester. The 1966 world champion died last month at the age of 86.
Numerous fans said goodbye to the Manchester United icon as the funeral procession with the coffin drove past the Old Trafford stadium, as the British news agency PA reported.
Kane pays tribute to ‘greatest English player’
Among those who attended the funeral service in Manchester Cathedral were the heir to the British throne and President of the English Football Association (FA), Prince William, England coach Gareth Southgate and Man Utd coaching legend Sir Alex Ferguson.
Charlton, whose coffin was decorated with white roses, was honored as a national hero in England. In 1966 he won the World Cup with the English national team in his own country with a 4-2 win against the Federal Republic. The long-time Manchester United professional had been suffering from dementia since 2020.
Many people reacted with shock to the news of his death. England’s former captain David Beckham posted a childhood photo of himself with Charlton. National team captain and Bayern star Harry Kane praised him as one of the “greatest English players”. The German record international player Lothar Matthäus said that Charlton was “like Uwe Seeler for Germany, a role model for all football fans in England”.
