Handball Bundesliga: Magdeburg new league leader – Kiel wins against Berlin

The duel for the lead in the handball Bundesliga is coming to a head. Magdeburg moves ahead of the Füchse Berlin, who are tied on points. The record champions are also hoping again.

The children of the SCM players were also allowed onto the field for the big Magdeburg celebration. Thanks to the help of handball record champions THW Kiel, SC Magdeburg has taken the lead in the Bundesliga with a strong offensive performance.

The Champions League winner took advantage of Füchse Berlin’s mistake in Kiel and defeated newly promoted ThSV Eisenach 38:31 (24:16). With 21:3 points each, Magdeburg and Berlin are now at the top, but the Elbe city team has the better goal difference.

Magdeburg’s left winger Matthias Musche particularly praised his team’s “perfect” attacking play in the first half. “We had a 92 percent shooting rate. That’s of course world class,” said the 31-year-old at Dyn and, after winning his 15th competitive game in a row, said: “Just keep going and see where it leads in the end.”

Magdeburg’s victory was to be expected, the success of the unsettled and unstable Kiel team against the league leaders from Berlin, who had previously been unbeaten in the league, was a small surprise. Despite the weakest start to the Bundesliga in 21 years, the THW myth still holds true. With the win against the Füchse, the North Germans, who already have more minus points than in the entire previous season, preserved their chances of winning the title.

Kiel finds the THW DNA

A few days after the disgrace in the Champions League, Kiel showed a different face in front of 10,285. The verbal all-round attack from pivot Hendrik Pekeler had an effect. Will, commitment and fighting spirit are back on the fjord. Also thanks to veteran Domagoj Duvnjak, who was the best THW thrower with nine goals. “He radiates the THW DNA,” said coach Filip Jicha, praising the Croatian’s gala performance.

However, the Foxes, for whom it was the third game within seven days, were unable to build on the performances from the previous weeks. Above all, the capital city team’s attacking game was very flawed. “Kiel took away a lot of weapons from us today,” analyzed coach Jaron Siewert. Playmaker Mathias Gidsel still sees no reason to worry. “No stress,” said the Dane, looking ahead to the long season ahead.

The duel comes to a head

SC Magdeburg had significantly more stress than expected in the early stages. Both the club world champions and the Thuringians seemed nervous. Neither team was able to pull away in the first quarter of an hour. SCM coach Bennet Wiegert called for calm during a time-out and called for duels to be won – the speech had an effect.

The SCM then dominated at will. The defense stabilized, but at the same time Eisenach made more and more missed throws. The lead was eleven goals at one point, but shrank to five in the middle of the second half due to some lapses in concentration.

However, the victory was no longer in danger, so the duel at the top of the table between the premier class winner from Magdeburg and the European League champion Berlin continued to escalate. MT Melsungen remains third. The Hessians won against Balingen-Weilstetten on Sunday.
