Not least because of the disruptive actions of the “last generation” at the men’s slalom in Gurgl, the Ski World Cup is currently heavily influenced by the climate protection discussion.

A topic that is not only brought into alpine skiing from outside. On the one hand, the organizers had set up a green event in Gurgl, and on the other hand, there is even an ÖSV activist, Julian Schütter, who is considered a loudspeaker among the athletes in this regard.

The 25-year-old specifically moved his residence from Schladming to Innsbruck in order to save CO2 when traveling to the training routes. At the World Ski Championships in Courchevel this year, he presented the FIS with an open letter with demands for greener skiing.

Threatened with beatings

“It’s really impressive what Julian is willing to do for his vision of a better world,” says ÖSV speed coach Sepp Brunner to “Blick”. “Because the train connections to the ski areas are often really bad, Julian often arrives at the hotel four to five hours later than his team.”

Within the ÖSV team, Schütter obviously doesn’t just have open ears.

Because the vegan Schütter tried to talk his teammates out of eating meat, a colleague complained to the team management: “If Schütter were to criticize me for my meat consumption again, I wouldn’t hit him.”

“What’s wrong with that?”

The environmental issue is polarizing. Henrik Kristoffersen had to be held back by supervisors at the Gugl Slalom in order not to get through to the climate activists. “These damn idiots,” the Norwegian complained angrily.

Schütter thinks differently, and in the past has even supported “Last Generation” sticking campaigns on streets.

“What’s wrong with me working for the survival of my sport?” is Schütter’s counter question.
