Tiger Woods and his return to golf: few tournaments and far from the top

The 15-time Major winner told Golf Digest in an interview published Monday that while he is confident of returning to the sport at some point, he expected he will only play select tournaments from now on.

The 45-year-old former world number one suffered a fractured right leg after a car he was driving in a Los Angeles suburb in February went off-road and rolled over multiple times.

Before the accident, Woods was already on a reduced schedule after multiple back and knee surgeries over the years.

The American told Golf Digest that his days as a full-time PGA Tour member were effectively over, saying that he now hoped to “pick and choose” events in the future.

“I think one thing that’s realistic is playing the Tour one day, never full time, never again, pick and choose,” Woods said. “Pick and pick a few events a year and play with it. I think that’s how I’m going to have to play it from now on. It’s a sad reality, but it’s my reality. I understand and accept it.”.

Woods generated buzz earlier this month after posting a video on Twitter of himself hitting balls, captioned “Progressing.”

Woods, who completed a fairy tale comeback from back surgery to capture his 15th major title at the 2019 Masters, questioned whether he had the same drive to now return to the top of his sport.

“I don’t have to compete and play against the best players in the world to have a great life,” Woods said. “After my back surgery, I had to climb Mount Everest one more time. I had to, and I did. This time, I don’t think I have the body to climb Mount Everest and that’s okay.”.

Woods clarified that “I can still participate in golf. If my leg is good, I can still do a tournament here or there. But as far as climbing the mountain again and getting to the top, I don’t think that’s a realistic expectation for me. “.

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods revealed that he had feared his leg would be amputated immediately after the February accident.

“There was a time when, I wouldn’t say it was 50/50, but it was very close to there if I was going to walk out of that hospital on one leg,” recalled the golf star.
