The plaintiff lawyer requested this sentence for the former soccer player, who was accused by a woman of raping her in a bathroom. The exlateral has been detained since January.

A Spanish prosecutor requests a nine-year prison sentence for the former footballer of the Barcelona and Brazil Dani Alves, who will be tried for sexual assault against a woman in Barcelona last year, according to a court document published Thursday.

Alves, who has been in prison since his arrest on January 20, allegedly violently attacked a woman in the bathroom of the VIP area of a nightclub in the Catalan city in the early hours of December 31, according to the document.

Alves has said that he had consensual sexual relations with his accuser after initially denying any sexual encounter with her.

The prosecutor also requested restraining orders for Alves after the prison sentence and that he pay compensation of 150,000 euros ($163,605) to the woman.

In August, a Barcelona-area court formally charged Alves after finding evidence of wrongdoing by the 40-year-old player, and later decided there was enough evidence to send him to trial. No date has been set yet.

In Spain, a rape complaint is investigated under the general accusation of sexual assault and sentences can lead to prison sentences of between four and 15 years.
