Upper Austria’s football family mourns Helmut Kitzmüller: The former goalkeeper for LASK and Vöest Linz died on Friday night at the age of 84.
Kitzmüller was the support of LASK when the athletes stormed to their only Austrian football championship title in 1965 and also celebrated the only cup victory in the club’s history in the same season.
He had already joined the Black and Whites in 1952 and thus inherited the legacy of his father Anton, who was also a LASK goalkeeper. At the age of 19, Kitzmüller was called up to the national team and also made the Olympic team.
In 1967 he moved to city rivals Vöest and ended his football career in 1975. He remained active in sports and was a regular at the legend meetings until the end.
LASK honors the champion goalkeeper with a minute’s silence before Saturday’s home game (5 p.m.) against Tyrol.
