SC Freiburg is overwhelmingly superior to newly promoted Darmstadt, but fails to score a three-pointer. A series continues for both teams.
The winless series of SC Freiburg and SV Darmstadt 98 in the Bundesliga continues. In the 1:1 (1:1) the Breisgauer missed a three-pointer for the fourth time in a row, the team of returnee Torsten Lieberknecht is even waiting a game longer for a sense of success.
The coach recently took a break for personal reasons. With 15 points, the sports club remains in midfield. Newly promoted Darmstadt missed out on gaining some breathing room in the bottom of the table.
The guests, for whom Alexander Brunst came on in place of the injured goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen and celebrated his Bundesliga debut, took the lead through Mathias Honsak after 18 minutes. Lucas Höler (35th) secured at least one point for Europa League participants Freiburg. The SC failed to capitalize on its oppressive superiority.
Especially since the home team initially came from behind in front of 34,300 spectators once again this season. They conceded five goals in the opening quarter of an hour. They survived this phase against Darmstadt, but shortly afterwards Honsak scored with Darmstadt’s first shot on goal. The Austrian benefited from his compatriot Philipp Lienhart deflecting the ball past goalkeeper Noah Atubolu.
Freiburgers control the game
Visibly unfazed by the setback, the home team continued to control the game and searched in vain for a gap in Freiburg’s constant rain for a long time. Michael Gregoritsch’s shot (26th) was cleared off the line, a little later Ritsu Doan (27th) shot the ball just past the goal and Vincenzo Grifo’s shot after half an hour did not find its way into the goal. Only Höler managed to get the ball over the line quickly. Lienhart and Matthias Ginter, who had also moved up, prepared.
Even after the break, the action mostly took place in Hesse’s half. Freiburg’s coach Christian Streich was still not satisfied. With his arms outstretched, he demanded more width in his team’s offensive game. However, the SC found it difficult to implement this.
Darmstadt itself only appeared sporadically in the opponent’s penalty area, but was unlucky when the ball only hit Grifo’s arm (53′) and a penalty was missed. The guests also had to make a substitution due to injury. After a collision, Christoph Zimmermann was taken off the field on a stretcher. Bartol Franjic came for him.
Honsak opened the final phase. The goalscorer of the 1-0 was put under decisive pressure by Ginter and narrowly missed. On the other side, Noah Weißhaupt and Maximilian Eggestein were denied by Brunst, who celebrated a decent Bundesliga debut and helped Darmstadt hold on to the point.
