The preliminary decision has been made. France is scheduled to host the Winter Games in 2030 and Salt Lake City in 2034. The IOC chose two countries with great Olympic experience.
After hosting the Summer Olympics, France and the United States will also host the 2030 and 2034 Winter Games.
In accordance with the International Olympic Committee’s new selection process with preferred hosts, the so-called targeted dialogue begins with the applicants, as the IOC Executive Committee under the leadership of Thomas Bach decided in Paris. After this preliminary decision, the final Olympic award is just a formality.
While the French, who are hosting the Summer Games in Paris next year, have earmarked the Alpine region for the skiing and Nice for the ice competitions, Salt Lake City will again be the winter venue in 2034, as it was in 2002. “The support from the mayor to the US government and the people is outstanding,” said Christophe Dubi, IOC Olympics director. The applicants from the state of Utah could have hosted the games in 2030, but preferred to have more distance from the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles.
Switzerland receives preferential rights for 2038
Since the next Winter Games are only six years away, France was given the provisional contract due to its immense Olympic experience. The country was able to send the previous winter hosts Chamonix (1924), Grenoble (1968) and Albertville (1992) as well as Nice into the running as host cities.
Switzerland should receive preferential treatment for the 2038 edition of the Olympics if it applies again. “In Switzerland, the competition venues are spread widely across the country and there were no Olympic villages in sight. Switzerland still has some homework to do,” explained Karl Stoss, chairman of the IOC’s “Future Host Commission”. Improvements must be made by 2027 at the latest. Sweden was also in the running, but its concept and economic calculations were not convincing.
In the targeted dialogue phase, negotiations will only take place with these candidates; the Olympic concept should be brought to final maturity. Next year, the IOC General Assembly will give the final approval for the 2030 and 2034 Winter Games. It is unclear whether this will be in Paris before the Games open, or whether the IOC will choose a location to give the Winter Games to France other than in France forgive.
Several applications previously withdrawn
The host for 2030 was actually supposed to be decided at the Rings Circle meeting in October in Mumbai. But potential favorites had stopped their efforts and thus put the IOC in trouble.
Sapporo, Japan, withdrew its application due to the turbulence surrounding the corruption scandal surrounding the 2021 Summer Games in Tokyo. Vancouver received no guarantees of public funding. That’s why the IOC recently encouraged other interested parties to make an attempt for 2030. The Swiss sports parliament had only approved an application the previous week. In France and Sweden, the Olympic projects had also overcome crucial hurdles on the way to an application in recent weeks.
The next Winter Games are scheduled for 2026 in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy. In the long term, however, the winter spectacle is a problem area for the IOC because of climate change. According to researchers’ calculations, only ten countries will still have enough snow and ice to host winter games from 2040 onwards.
