BIRMINGHAM. After serious riots before the Conference League game between Aston Villa and Legia Warsaw (final score 2-1), the English police arrested 46 Polish football supporters who were intent on rioting.
Four officers as well as a police dog and a horse were injured when they were attacked with pyrotechnics and projectiles, the authority said. It was 90 minutes of planned violence.
A police officer had to be treated in hospital for smoke inhalation. His fluorescent vest caught fire after he was hit by a flare, and the smoke went under his helmet. Citing medical services, the Birmingham Mail reported that a total of 14 people required medical treatment.
Because of the riots, no Legia fans were allowed into the stadium in Birmingham, central England. Chief Inspector Tim Robinson said the extraordinary violence had left police with no other choice. In any case, they were provided with 1,000 fewer tickets than usual. The reaction to the lockout was that incorrigibles from outside fired rockets into the arena.
