Who will the German national team face at the 2024 European Championship? The groups for the European Championship preliminary round will be drawn in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie. Everything is possible for the DFB team: a fantastic group as well as easy opponents.
Denmark, the Netherlands, defending champions Italy. The German national soccer team faces an enormously challenging group for the home European Championships at the draw this Saturday (6 p.m./ZDF, RTL and MagentaTV) in Hamburg. The preliminary round with Albania, Slovenia and a playoff participant is also possible. Julian Nagelsmann can only let it happen to him – but at least he is the first national coach to know.
The Raffle pots 1 to 4
The six preliminary round groups A, B, C, D, E and F each consist of a team from pots 1, 2, 3 and 4. Nagelsmann’s DFB selection is therefore initially avoiding the five nations from Pot 1.
Pot 1 | Germany (placed at position A1), Portugal, France, Spain, Belgium, England |
Pot 2 | Hungary, Türkiye, Denmark, Albania, Romania, Austria |
Pot 3 | Netherlands, Scotland, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic |
Pot 4 | Italy, Serbia, Switzerland, winner playoff A, winner playoff B, winner playoff C |
The mode:
Germany is the only nation not drawn and will play in position A1 in the opening game on June 14th in Munich. The nations in Pot 1 are drawn first, the first goes into Group B, the next goes into Group C and so on. The draw for the respective position in the group follows – only Germany is automatically the head of the group.
Next, the selection teams are drawn from pot 2, the first nation is the German group opponent, but then gets a group position (A2, A3 or A4). A2 is the opening opponent. The team subsequently drawn goes into Group B. This drawing mode continues until the last lottery ball in Pot 4. There are no requirements like in the European Cup that certain teams cannot play against each other in the group.
The exact scheduling of the games should be finalized and published shortly after the draw. The playoffs will follow in March, only then will all 24 European Championship participants be determined.
The placeholders
Playoff winners A will be determined by Poland, Wales, Finland and Estonia in March 2024. Playoff winners B are Israel, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iceland and Ukraine. From playoff path C, the candidates are Georgia, Greece, Kazakhstan and Luxembourg. Tournaments with semi-finals and finals are played. In the semi-finals, the teams better placed in the Nations League have home advantage.
