The French Ligue 1 is considering implementing the use of the white card as a test, which would mark a temporary exclusion of a footballer during a match, and would put it into practice next season, as announced today by the French press.

In this context, the IFAB (The International Football Association Board), an entity made up of the four British football federations and FIFA, responsible for the Laws of the Game on a global scale, proposed experimenting with a third card in matches.

The white card, which would be added to the yellow (warning) and red (expulsion) has already been in force in amateur football since 2018 in France and convinces Éric Borghini, president of the French federal commission of referees, RCM reported.
Borghini, who will soon speak with Antony Gautier, director of refereeing, to consider this possibility, indicated: “My feeling is that this temporary exclusion, which we already practice in certain leagues and certain districts, is interesting. The response I receive of amateur football is satisfactory”.
In the case of a large-scale experiment in professional leagues, Éric Borghini indicates that, however, for Ligue 1 to implement it next year, the agreement of the LFP (Professional Football League) and the executive committee of the FFF is necessary. (French Federation).
The head of the Federal Referees Commission also wants the measure to be accepted by coaches and players, also affected by this possible novelty.
“The white card has its advantages since it would prevent a definitive exclusion, especially at the beginning of the match, which unbalances an entire team. Temporary exclusion for certain types of fouls makes sense for the show and for football.”
This type of sanction is used in rugby, where a yellow card means 10 minutes of exclusion, and field hockey, green and two minutes off the field of play.
