Kreundl reached the final scheduled for Thursday evening with a time of 58.83 seconds as fifth overall of the two semi-finals. Reitshammer recorded the eighth fastest time overall in the semifinals with 57.87 seconds.

Two youngsters were able to convince. Luka Mladenovic also qualified for the semi-finals in the 100 m breaststroke, in which the 19-year-old improved again with a time of 58.45 seconds and finished 14th. 19-year-old Julia Iris Berger also finished 13th overall in her European Championship debut in the 200 m backstroke with a new personal best of 2:07.57 minutes in the semifinals.

“Everything is possible” for Kreundl

Kreundl was “totally happy” after her semi-final appearance. The Upper Austrian finished third in her run, but second-placed Bulgarian Diana Petkowa was disqualified. “I can do even better in the final. Anything is possible and I’ll just let myself be surprised tomorrow. The cards will be reshuffled, everyone has to perform again,” said Kreundl about her chances in the medal decision (start at 6:58 p.m.).

Reitshammer also achieved his big goal. In eighth place, the Tyrolean just slipped into the final field (start at 8:01 p.m.). “I would have been happy if the time had been a little faster,” he admitted frankly. But Reitshammer remained optimistic: “Something can definitely happen. As eighth, you can’t go any further back in the final. You can only go forward.”

Lukas Edl swam the Austrian junior record twice, both in the 50 m freestyle and as the starting swimmer in the 4×50 m medley relay, but unlike the day before (over the 100 m dolphin), he didn’t get any further. With the ninth-placed relay team, he was only 0.11 seconds short. Heiko Gigler (21.72) and Leon Opatril (22.49) also missed promotion in the 50 m freestyle. Alexander Trampitsch had to give up the 100 m breaststroke (1:00.98), Luca Karl had to give up the 1,500 m freestyle (15:24.48). Fabienne Pavlik also got stuck in the preliminary round of the 200 m Delfin (2:13.54).
