The self-confidence of German handball players is higher than ever. The new belief should help in the crucial game against Romania.
According to national handball coach Markus Gaugisch, the German national players at the World Cup in Scandinavia are more confident than ever before.
“I feel the new self-confidence and I enjoy it. I enjoy this killer mentality of being merciless at the right moment and breaking away from all doubts and influences,” said the 49-year-old to the German Press Agency and spoke of a special quality in him Team.
At the highlight of the season in Denmark, Sweden and Norway, the DHB team has so far not only made people sit up and take notice with victories, but also with unusually offensive statements. “Our demands on training and our performance have changed,” said co-captain Emily Bölk and explained: “Many now play for top international clubs. Competing with the best in Europe is no longer something special for many, but rather daily business.”
The DHB selection goes into the first main round game in the early evening (6 p.m./Sportdeutschland.tv) against Romania confident of victory. Gaugisch said it was “a sticking point game” for both teams. “If Romania loses this game, they are usually gone. And if we shake off Romania, we have a very good chance of getting into the top two.”
The German squad’s other group opponents are Serbia on Saturday and Denmark on Monday. The best two in the group qualify for the quarterfinals.
