After a lead of 1.48 seconds the day before, the Italian Olympic champion prevailed again on Saturday 0.84 seconds ahead of the American Breezy Johnson. Third place went to Corinne Suter from Switzerland. For the ÖSV women, after Mirjam Puchner’s third place on Friday, Cornelia Hütter missed the podium in fourth by just 0.18 seconds.
Since the 2019 finale in Soldeu, the Styrian has almost consistently missed starts due to several injuries in the past two and a half years. In the pre-winter season, she only drove two World Cup races in Italy because of her injury status. Even if the podium was missed this time, the ÖSV women with places four (Hütter), five (Chrstine Scheyer), eight (Puchner), eleven (Ramona Siebenhofer) and twelve (Tamara Tippler) delivered another one in the Canadian Rocky Mountains strong team performance.
During the comeback of the North American tour after the previous year’s cancellation due to Corona, the second race of the Canada triple pack for alpine ski women took place under changed conditions. After bright sunshine on Friday, the women had to struggle with some snowfall on Saturday.
Completely untouched by this, Goggia – again with starting number five – drove again sovereign and again the winner was certain early on. Even if their lead was “only” 0.84 seconds this time. Johnson had tirelessly complained the day before that he wanted to win the Downhill World Cup in the Olympic season despite Goggia’s superiority.
“Most of them will have analyzed my trip,” was Goggia’s fears after the fabulous trip the day before. Ultimately, however, her 13th World Cup victory, the tenth in the downhill, was unavoidable on Saturday. It was Goggia’s sixth downhill win in a row and she landed on the podium in the seventh downhill run in a row.
Last year, after finishing second in Val d’Isere, Goggia had won four times in a row (Val d’Isere, St. Anton and Crans Montana / 2) before she seriously injured her knee at the end of January and also her home because of the early end of the season – Missed the World Cup in Cortina. Nevertheless, the second crystal ball for the Downhill World Cup could no longer be taken from her. Since Saturday, the 29-year-old has been a member of the group of runners who have won more than ten World Cup runs. Apart from Goggia, only Lara Gut-Behrami (11) is still active.
After the two runs, the Canada program will end with a Super-G on Sunday (6.30 p.m.). After that, the women will also go back to Europe.
