“Snakebite” Peter Wright is eliminated from the World Darts Championship in the first round

The 2024 Darts World Cup has one more surprise: co-favorite Peter Wright, better known as “Snakebite”, says goodbye in the first round. Even his opponent is at a loss.

Humiliated, Peter Wright packed up his arrows and shrugged off the biggest darts stage in the world. The colorful bird of paradise with green hair this time also received pity from his opponent Jim Williams. “It was really hard to see Peter fight like that. I have so much respect for this man. It was a really strange game,” said Williams after his clear 3-0 win over the two-time world champion. Wright scored an average of 83.87 points on Wednesday evening and was as bad as he was at the World Cup in December 2009.

“To be honest: I don’t know what happened. I have absolutely no idea, training was still going well,” said a perplexed Wright. The 53-year-old had a fantastic performance before the start of the game. With green hair, a special Christmas shirt and a string of lights around his neck, Snakebite came onto the stage. There he took the pompoms from a cheerleader and used them to encourage the audience in Alexandra Palace to dance.

Peter Wright mentally on the ground at the Darts World Cup

There was nothing more going on in terms of sport. Wright narrowly lost two sets and completely collapsed mentally in the third set. “I just played terribly,” Wright said after the game. In the world rankings, the Scot, placed fourth, lost his world title from two years ago. Wright falls behind Gerwyn Price (Wales), Nathan Aspinall (England) and Danny Noppert from the Netherlands. Even falling out of the top 10 is theoretically possible.
