The ÖSV speed aces had a wasted day in the descent from Bormio. The French surprise man Cyprien Sarrazin stole the show from Marco Odermatt (+0.09) on Thursday with his first World Cup victory in the downhill. The Swiss took over the overall World Cup lead from Schwarz.

The Carinthian landed in the safety net after a misunderstanding and a violent take-off on the infamous Stelvio. According to ÖSV, Schwarz complained of pain in his right knee. He left the scene of the accident and destination area supported by helpers and was transferred by helicopter to Innsbruck for detailed clarification. He had shown promise after fast part-time times.

After the slalom victory in Madonna di Campiglio, Schwarz made his Bormio debut and generally nurtured the hope that he would be the first Austrian since Marcel Hirscher to win the Grand Crystal Globe in 2019. The 28-year-old is now facing his most serious injury since tearing the syndesmotic ligament in his left ankle (November 2021). He then laboriously worked his way back forward.

Vincent Kriechmayr skied a supposedly damaged ski to fifth place (+2.07 seconds). Last year’s winner wanted to have caught a stone like the eliminated Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. “Annoying, but part of it,” said Kriechmayr. Daniel Danklmaier was in 14th place after 30 riders (+2.92), Daniel Hemetsberger lost a top 15 placement in the upper part with a wide line (+3.42 seconds). Otmar Striedinger was more than four seconds behind.

Bormio “King” Dominik Paris was among those defeated before the Super-G on Friday (11.30 a.m./ORF 1). The seven-time Stelvio winner from South Tyrol, most recently also a winner in Val Gardena, temporarily lay down in the snow on the way to a possible podium finish.

Sarrazin had already put in a strong performance with a best training time and successfully brought his risky style to the slopes. Odermatt didn’t want to blame himself in the ORF interview. “It was the perfect ride, everything worked out, but one person was faster.” Third-placed Cameron Alexander (CAN) was already 1.23 seconds behind.
