Madeleine Egle triumphed in the single-seater at the third World Cup stop in Winterberg by 29 thousandths of a second ahead of her closest competitor Julia Taubitz from Germany and the Tyrolean Hannah Prock. In the doubles, Juri Gatt/Riccardo Schöpf won after an unsuccessful final training session ahead of the new overall leaders duo Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt (+0.066) from Germany.
“We never expected this”
“We are overjoyed, we never expected it. We had a fall in training yesterday,” recalled Gatt. It would even have been possible for ÖRV to win one-two. But Thomas Steu and Wolfgang Kindl, who were leading at halftime, made a mistake in the first corner after pushing unrhythmically, seemed to be in danger of falling at one point and had to settle for seventh place (+0.414). The newly formed duo also had to cede overall leadership to the competition.
Egle had already won the 2022/23 season finale in North Rhine-Westphalia. Lisa Schulte – last year’s runner-up – rounded off the strong ÖRV result in fifth place. In Egle’s eleventh World Cup victory, Prock (+0.305) was on the podium again for the first time since 2019.
Shoulder injury as an obstacle?
In the overall World Cup, Taubitz still leads 55 points ahead of Egle, who celebrated a perfect European Championship dress rehearsal. “Since Igls and Winterberg are a bit similar in terms of attitude, I of course hope that things can continue like this in Igls.” Her shoulder injury is still a bit of a hindrance. “It’s not like I can make a full start for myself,” Egle said.
In the doubles, Selina Egle, Madeleine’s younger sister, and Lara Kipp defended their overall lead with third place. The two Austrians made things even more exciting with a track record in the second round, four hundredths of a second behind the winners Jessica Degenhardt/Cheyenne Rosenthal (GER). The Toboggan World Cup in Winterberg ends on Sunday with the men’s single-seater races and the team relay.
