Franz Beckenbauer has had an impressive football career. From his beginnings in Munich-Giesing, through Bayern Munich to the World Cup as a player (1974) and coach (1990) and a key official in the summer fairy tale of 2006. The Germans even forgave him for singing performances and ready-made soup advertisements. But the last World Cup in Germany casts a shadow over his work: the circumstances under which the World Cup was awarded could never be finally clarified.

Nevertheless, Beckenbauer remains the first international football superstar from the Federal Republic of Germany who played with the legendary Pelé at New York Cosmos and called him his friend until his death in 2022. The Munich native was already in too poor health to travel to Brazil for his funeral. Now “the emperor” has died – and leaves behind a piece of sports history.
