The 26-year-old Tyrolean, nephew of motorcycle legend Heinz Kinigadner, rode right into the top of the world on Wednesday as part of his Dakar debut on the 118 kilometers between Al-Hofuf and Shubaytah. Ebster was 4:33 minutes behind the Chilean day winner Pablo Quintanilla and is in 26th place in the overall ranking.
However, Ebster extended his lead in the “Original by Motul” class, where no mechanics are allowed. There, Ebster from the Kini Rally Racing Team has a lead of more than an hour over his closest pursuers after five of twelve stages. In the overall motorcycle ranking, Ross Branch from Botswana is again leading, while Yazeed Al-Rajhi from Saudi Arabia defended his top position in the cars. The day’s victory went to Qatari Dakar veteran Nasser Al-Attiyah, who is second in the overall standings, 9:03 minutes behind.
