It was an emotional victory for Bayern: The 3-0 win at the start of the spring season of the German Bundesliga was all about remembering Franz Beckenbauer.
During the minute of mourning, the Allianz Arena, which was sold out with 75,000 spectators, became completely silent. “The figure of light goes on a final journey – rest in peace, Emperor!” was written on a Bayern fans banner.
Beckenbauer’s hit “Nobody can separate good friends” could be heard from the stadium loudspeakers as the teams came onto the pitch. It was also heard during the Bayern goals from Jamal Musiala (18th, 70th) and Harry Kane (91st).

CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge praised Beckenbauer as a “unique person”. The Bayern professionals, including ÖFB team player Konrad Laimer, played the game in a special jersey with the imprint “Thank you Franz”. During the warm-up they wore the special shirts, and before kick-off they wore retro tracksuits from the Beckenbauer era with his number five on the back. Before kick-off, the center circle was adorned with a banner featuring the club’s icon.
The world champion’s achievements and life as a player and coach were commemorated with video clips.
Buried in the family circle
The funeral took place the afternoon before the game – without announcement and in the immediate family circle. According to media reports, Beckenbauer was buried in the family grave at the Perlacher Forst cemetery in the south of Munich next to his parents Antonie and Franz. The funeral service will follow on Friday in the Allianz Arena. Bayern give out tickets for free, preferably to club members. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has announced that Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will give a speech. ARD will broadcast the event live, starting at 3 p.m.
