What began in 2002 with 5,000 sports enthusiasts has long since grown into Upper Austria’s largest running event. With around 20,000 participants and 100,000 spectators from almost 80 nations, the multiple “marathon of the year” in Austria is meanwhile an important economic factor and tourist magnet with thousands of overnight stays in the region Held in spring rather than autumn. After the pandemic-related cancellation in 2020, the first staging of Upper Austria’s largest running event in the cooler half of the year not only set countless hobby running enthusiasts back in motion this year, but also brought an internationally recognized top result with a new course record for women: the Kenyan marathon debutante Brenda Jerotich Kiprono cracked Lisa-Christina Stublic’s 10-year-old record with 2:30:27.
The ongoing pandemic continues to pose many hurdles to planning major events. The organizers have therefore decided to hold it again in autumn. In the anniversary year, the competitions will take place on the weekend of 21.-23. October 2022. The 20th Oberbank Linz Danube Marathon will take place on Sunday, October 23rd, 2022, the ÖGK Junior Marathon powered by ORF Radio OÖ the day before, on October 22nd, and the Linz Marathon Sports Fair from October 21st to 22nd.
“We did not make the decision to postpone this year’s competitions to autumn easy, but we were rewarded with many fresh perspectives. With the experience we have gained, we can now start planning a safe and high-quality anniversary run in 2022,” says Rainer Stadler , Executive Director of LIVA.
The anniversary run will also bring some great innovations. More information on this should be available at the beginning of next year. It is already certain that LIVA’s free running training will probably take place from January 15th. “With the fixed date for the anniversary edition, we can start with targeted training immediately. Our running coaches and I are looking forward to many familiar and hopefully new faces,” says race director Günther Weidlinger.
